Periodontal Disease
The word periodontal means “around the tooth”. Periodontal disease attacks the gums and the bone that support the teeth. Plaque is a sticky film of food debris, bacteria, and saliva. If plaque is not removed, it turns into calculus (tartar). When plaque and calculus are not removed, they begin to destroy the gums and bone. Periodontal disease is characterized by red, swollen, and bleeding gums.
Four out of five people have periodontal disease and don’t know it! Most people are not aware of it because the disease is usually painless in the early stages.
Not only is it the number one reason for tooth loss, research suggests that there may be a link between periodontal disease and other diseases such as, stroke, bacterial pneumonia, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and increased risk during pregnancy. Researchers are determining if inflammation and bacteria associated with periodontal disease affects these systemic diseases and conditions. Smoking also increases the risk of periodontal disease.
Good oral hygiene, a balanced diet, and regular dental visits can help reduce your risk of developing periodontal disease.

Testimonials
"I was nervous about going to a new dentist. I was very happy with my experience when I left. They are kind , courteous, take time to explain what they are doing. Take time to let you know procedures and cost opinions. I'm satisfied with Dr Kaufmann and his staff. Thank you very much!"
"I am always pleased and impressed with the care given at the Smile Center. Joelle is especially pleasant and professional. I walk away knowing that my teeth have had a thorough cleaning and examination."
"I absolutely can’t recommend smile center enough. Although I moved to Milwaukee 4 years ago, I still drive up for my appointments. Good communication and a friendly atmosphere go a long way and smile center has both."
"I highly recommend Dr Kaufmann. I love that he can do a complete crown in one visit. I’ve had bad luck with prior dentists. Dr Kaufmann is a perfectionist, what you want from the person making your crown. The entire office staff here are top notch. Joelle is my hygienist, highly recommend her too."
